Sheffield Wednesday’s 5-0 defeat to Brentford left Garry Monk speechless on Saturday and he may have to find his voice and turn things around quickly if he is going to stay in South Yorkshire beyond the end of the season.
He has already been the subject of significant fan criticism after overseeing a run of just two wins in 14 league games that has left many supporters disillusioned with the club.
However, some of that is aimed at the wider aspect of the Owls, how they’re being run and the issues which run deeper than the manager at the helm – such as player recruitment.
In response to another defeat some fans discussed those wider problems, and showed support for Monk due to the fact he has had to put up with them since arriving in August.
The kind words for Monk are a little surprising considering much of the negative run is of his own doing, as it was his choice alone to freeze out the likes of Sam Hutchinson and Keiren Westwood, while he has also failed to deal with the long-term injury Steven Fletcher picked up in December.
He has good players at his disposal, many of whom have played in teams that have made the play-offs before or even the Premier League, such as Jacob Murphy, Moses Odubajo and Fernando Forestieri, yet Wednesday now sit 15th.
