West Ham United could well stay in the Premier League this season.
Of course, all football is currently suspended, and the Hammers, as it stands, are safe, but with an asterisk next to their name. They sit 16th, but they are level on points with AFC Bournemouth, and are only ahead on goal difference, by three goals.
David Moyes, of course, was drafted back into the fold at the club in December, and his task is simple: Keep the Hammers up.
But we’ve been here before with Moyes.
He managed the club in the 2017-18 season and took them to a 13th-placed finish. Having been appointed following the sacking of Slaven Bilic in November, he took charge of 27 league games.
In that time, the Hammers won eight of them – he had to wait four matches before a win, mind – and drew nine while losing 10. That included a thumping 4-0 loss to Everton, 4-1 defeats to Liverpool, Swansea City, and Arsenal, and a humbling 3-0 defeat to Burnley.
This season is already following a similar pattern. Appointed three months ago, his first game came against AFC Bournemouth on New Year’s Day. The Hammers won that 4-0 but their only other victory under the former Everton boss has come against Southampton, a 3-1 victory at the London Stadium.
They have lost six outings, to Sheffield United, Leicester City, Liverpool, twice, Manchester City, and Arsenal. The loss to Leicester was particularly chastening, given the 4-1 scoreline.
Draws with Everton and Brighton & Hove Albion have seen them pick up two more points but this has been a particularly underwhelming run.
Should they manage to stay in the division, there has to be an understanding that they could well do better if another manager is available.
Back in 17-18, after survival was secured, West Ham still went out and appointed Manuel Pellegrini as manager.
Did he really play for us?! No West Ham fan has managed to name all of these obscure Irons signings….
It may not have worked out particularly brilliantly but this is a former Premier League winner who could have been a huge upgrade.
Davids Gold and Sullivan should be on the lookout for similar this summer.
Meanwhile, West Ham have an “astonishing” talent in their academy!
