As reported by The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are tracking the progress of Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah, as a potential replacement for Toby Alderweireld.
What’s the story?
With Alderweireld having not yet signed a new contract at the club, the paper reckon that Tottenham are planning to sell him in the summer, with his current deal set to expire at the end of next season.
One potential replacement is Jonathan Tah, who The Mirror say Spurs are already scouting should that new deal with the Belgian fail to materialise.
Rated at £35m, the report says that Leverkusen are unlikely to let him leave on the cheap, but with Spurs having significant spending power, is he a player they should be targeting in the summer?
Who is he?
Still just 22 years of age, Tah has emerged as one of the brightest defensive prospects in Germany, already winning caps for the national team and helping his club compete for European spots in the Bundesliga.
Tall and powerful, he certainly has the physical presence to be a success in England, but also possesses the ball-playing skills that would allow him to fit into Mauricio Pochettino’s system at Spurs.
With Spurs already having capable centre-backs in Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen, Tah would be an excellent third man to compete for first-team places should Alderweireld end up moving away from the club.
